Objective 3.4 & Final dates for unit 3

Tuesday and Thursday we will cover objective 3.4: Intermolecular and intramolecular forces

Here is the power-point from class: 3.4 Power-point

We will pre-quiz on Thursday, and quiz on Friday. There will probably be some time to review for the unit 3 exam on those days as well.

You will receive your 3.3 quiz grades later this week.

Unit 3 Exam is TUESDAY, November 15th! Start studying now.

Thanksgiving break is just around the corner :)

Links

I'm not sure why my links will work for a day and then stop working..

If this ever happens, you can always go to my portal website. http://portal.bentonvillek12.org/kcastleberry/SitePages/Home.aspx

If that doesn't open it, you can go to bentonville high school website, academics tab, teacher websites, Castleberry.

There is a tab on the left side of the website that says PAP CHEM unit 3. All of the documents I have ever put onto the blog are on that website in folders on the left hand side.

There is always a backup way of accessing the documents.

3.3 Power-point, If it doesn't work, go to the portal website.

Objective 3.3

Objective 3 contains:

Molecular Orbital Theory-Sigma and Pi Bonds
VSEPR Theory-Geometry of molecules
Hybridization

Here is a video that really helps with sigma and pi bonds. Remember that your job is to look at a molecule and tell me how many sigma and pi bonds it has, and label those bonds.

We will continue to practice VSEPR theory, and cover hybridization on Thursday. Be sure that you can complete the Covalent Bonding chart in order to be successful.

The power-point I used in class will be available to you later this week.

Pre-quiz Thursday ****I made a change to this

Quantum Number & Electron Configuration Practice

Here are some problems on quantum numbers and electron configurations. You should be able to do the quantum number practice without trouble. However, because we briefly covered electron configuration basics, you should try to use the aufbau filling chart to write electron configurations. I encourage each of you to look at the electron configuration power-point before next class to get a head start.

QUIZ 2.3 MATERIALS

I wasn't able to finish electron configurations with you all today, which means we will finish at the beginning of class on Thursday, practice, review, and take the quiz. Here are the power-points I used to teach energy wavelength and frequency, quantum numbers, and electron configurations:

Energy and quantum numbers notes

electron configuration notes

Look through the electron configuration power-point to review and see what is up ahead! If you can figure it out, that is great!

Keep looking for updates this weekend through Tuesday. I will try to post some more practice problems on quantum numbers and electron configurations. For energy, wavelength, and frequency practice, see the post below.

UPDATE: More Practice & Quantum Numbers Homework

Great job in class today. I think everyone has just about mastered energy calculations. Here are some more practice problems to do at home before the quiz:

Energy wavelength and frequency practice

I am extending the due date for the quantum numbers   homeworkto next Thursday (the date of the quiz). There is one last thing I need to add in class tomorrow, and I want you to have your homework to study for the quiz. *(6th period-I need to add one thing concerning the d and f block principal quantum numbers. You will be able to start some of the homework. But, when it asks about d and f block, you may be a little confused. You will obtain this key piece of info tomorrow in class)

Videos on Atomic Models & Week of 9/12

We have finished objective 2.1! The quiz over this will be on Tuesday, 9/13. These videos will help you understand more about each of the scientists we covered! Do your homework on objective 2.1 so that you can stay caught up!

J.J. Thomson

Ernest Rutherford

Robert Millikan

Niels Bohr (Skip to 1:45)

After the quiz on Tuesday, we will begin objective 2.2 and get into atomic structure and average atomic mass. We will also do a penny activity on average atomic mass. On Thursday and Friday, we will get into objective 2.3, with a focus on electron configurations.

Unit 1 Remediation is due Friday for those that scored below a 70%. Keep up with your objective 2 homework!!

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

End of Unit 1, Beginning of Unit 2

We have just finished unit 1. Today in class we will learn how to keep track of objective grades throughout the year. You will receive your graded lab I, objective 1.1 and 1.2 quizzes, and unit 1 exam. From these, we will record scores on graph paper. If you did not do well on unit 1 material, you need to make sure you continue to practice. I have attached some remediation problems for unit 1. If you scored below a 70%, you need to complete these! Remember: each exam is cumulative, containing a few questions from earlier material. In order to do well in this course, you need to work on the material at home. If you can go home and review what we have learned each day and do a few practice problems, you can succeed!

Unit 1 Remediation

On Friday, we performed the flame test lab. If you were absent, here is the video of the lab:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJb0iosfpuA&feature=player_embedded

Watch it, and complete the tables in the document: Lab 3: Flame Test

This week, we will begin unit 2. On Tuesday, we will go over the test and begin drawing the atomic models in groups. On Thursday, we will cover objective 2 and if we have time, we will begin objective 3, electron configurations. I have attached the homework and notes for this unit.
